"...most people are now outraged by this
development..."

Take a poll. Ask a few people you know to tell you three facts each about Larry Summers, Turbo Tax Tim and Simon Johnson. (You could insert other prominent names from the financial fiasco Dodd, Blankfein, etc.)

Most people I speak with (friends and family) have very little idea how embedded Wall Street execs. are in Washington DC. The most informed have some abstract willingness to concede that Big Finance has undo influence on policy. Virtually none of them can name names or institutions involved in the revolving door between biz and govt. or cite examples of self-dealing.

Most of the outrage I've seen never gets directed at anything more specific than bonuses. And even that outrage never results in anything more than verbal complaints.

I think the readers of SI and other investment boards live in an echo chamber of information that the vast majority of the American public find it easier and more comfortable to ignore.
