One acre is always 43560 square feet, and a section of land is usually one mile on a side, but a section of land is not always 640 acres. Surveyors shunted all the error to the top tier of sections in a township, so Sections 1-6 are usually less than 640 acres.

You can't lay a square grid on a sphere, it's true.

I did load Google Earth to get my estimate of the size of the area where our Tea Party was held. I measured a couple of vectors that I could see, and Google Earth gave me the distance in fractions of a mile.

My home lot is 1.5 acres, so I have a pretty good idea of how big the site was.

I gave every person sixteen square feet, but I'm pretty sure the true allocation was more like nine square feet.

If that's the case, the true attendance is closer to 4000-6000 persons.
