Thank God for the Greatest Generation. There will never be another so.

At the retirement home where my mother lived last year we got acquainted with an old gentleman who flew Corsairs for the Marines. He lovingly wheeled his wife around in a wheel chair and talked to her as if she could actually understand what he was saying. To me, she looked as if she would rather be dead, and more or less just stared into space.

"You wouldn't believe what she did in the Navy!" he would exclaim with obvious pride. "She taught sailors how to shoot anti-aircraft guns!"
