The Simonyi chair was created in 1995. Dawkins just retired in 2008. Its unlikely that creation of the chair or the appointment of Dawkins to fill it had anything to do with a response to "creationists". Or to intelligent design. Behe's first book 'Darwin's Black Box' was written in 1996. Intelligent design was just an idea in a few folks heads at the time. Dawkins however had begun campaigning against religion long before he got the chair. In 1993, he came out with Viruses of the Mind, which pronounced religion a mental virus. The Blind Watchmaker was written back in 1986. BTW it seems to me that he did nothing BUT campaign against religion after this appointment. I've looked at lists of his publications and beginning in 1968 and for years thereafter he wrote mainly journal articles that one would expect a zoologist to write. This seems to have been the last scientific work he did: Dawkins, R. (1990). "Parasites, desiderata lists and the paradox of the organism". Parasitology 100 Suppl: S63–73. PMID 2235064. ---------- THE POINT IS the DIDN"T create funding for a religious order!! I'm sure that wasn't Simonyi's purpose and with a new man in the job now (a mathematician), it may be the chair won't be a defacto position in an atheist order. I guess wacko creationists would be the bad religious people. Regardless, the point I was making when I posted the original piece is that there is strong evidence religion involvement is good for young people. I regard getting into labelilng some religious peopld good and some bad as off the point.
