China Official Calls For 'Bigger Say' In Raw Material Pricing

BOAO, China (Dow Jones)--China should be more active a participant the international commodity price-setting mechanisms and seek a "bigger say" in the pricing process, as it is one of the world's biggest consumers of raw materials, said a top government official Sunday.

"China needs to play an active role in pricing the global raw material products, through overseas trade and investment," said Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice chairman of China's National Reform and Development Commission at Boao forum Asia, a regional political and business summit.

"Chinese firms need to join the [commodities] price talks actively," he added.

Zhang also reiterated Beijing's earlier tone that China needs to "strengthen and improve" the country's raw material reserve, to prevent future price fluctuations.
