I am pretty sure, and that comes from experience, that those Italians, who have a job, mostly work pretty hard. They may take an hour off mid day - not 2 hours like the French - but then they work late hours.

A lot of Italians, however, and that in particular goes for the South, just don't have any jobs because there aren't that many to be had.

But that doesn't make them lazier than northern Italians. But it does raise the question as to why their are no jobs. It doesn't make sense that northern industry doesn't take advantage of the cheaper labor in the South much like what has happened in this country.
