So if the South Italian problems have their roots in people being more lazy than those up north, then equally the East German problems would seem to have their roots quite like those in the South of Italy.

The only common denominator I could think of here: 40 years of heavy exposition to communism.

Which doesn't really explain anything because the Germans have had good success with plants they have built in the Czech Republic, Poland, the Baltic states, etc., all of which had a long exposure to communism. I believe the problem with the form GDR is that West Germany made it too easy for them. For an example, they should never have let the GDR Deutschmark quickly have parity with the West's Deutschmark. They tried to make overnite the GDR's standard of living the equivalent of the West's. They didn't want the East Germans to feel inferior. And yet, they do......the West Germans make fun of the way East Germans talk, the way they dress, the way they live etc.

As for Italy, I don't know why the South is fukked up vis-a-vis the North. Maybe they have a lot of wingers. ;-)
