that's the problem with friedman. he claims to be a guru, to provide an all-encompassing meta-narrative, both in theory and in policy praxis. simple methods, simple conclusions, simple solutions. tight money and "free markets" and everyone will be fat & happy. externalities, inefficiencies, oligopolies, the relations of social power... none of them ever enter the picture.

ever read karl polanyi? i like him for broad theory, though he never does any math, nor offers any policy solutions.
