California set to broil for third straight day LOS ANGELES (AP) — California is bracing for a third spring day of summer-like heat. Forecasters predict dry and hot Santa Ana winds blowing from Nevada Tuesday will bake parts of the state. The National Weather Service reported temperatures reached 100 degrees in downtown Los Angeles on Monday, breaking the previous record of 96 set for the date in 1958. San Francisco set a new mark at an unseasonable 93 degrees. Forecaster Bonnie Bartling says sea breezes could stem some heat on the Southern California coasts Tuesday, but valleys and mountain areas will stay blazing. Record highs also are expected in the San Joaquin Valley. The NWS says the heat is speeding snowmelt in the Sierra Nevada, meaning swift, cold and potentially dangerous mountain rivers and streams. usatoday.com
