On fear....
M.N., Agreed... fear is useful... But there are many forms... I know little of the ocean and have no opinion... I've spent most of my life in forests and fields...and a little of it in cities... There is little to fear in the forests and waters that I frequent... perhaps a nip on the foot by the pugnacious bass that used to hide under a dock by my favourite swimming hole... the possibility of a lightning strike when camping on a stormy night, falling down a steep ravine when hiking, drowning or being crushed by your canoe when running whitewater... All of these things are possible... However, with the exception of the lightning... at least it would seem that some degree of care, knowledge and preparation would prevent most disasters...
But of cities and man... well.... I fear them more than any bolt of lightning, or foraging black bear gorging on wild apples in the back forty... Fear is relative to our experiences... City friends come here to visit and are afraid of the bugs, the animals, and of getting lost in the bush... Conversely, when I go to the city, I experience fear of freeway pile-ups, random acts of violence, and of losing my way... We fear what we don't understand...
Well,... enough on fear... (-: Lady Croc |
