TJ, the reason Tibet was not bought was that when primates conduct territorial warfare, the idea of buying adjacent territory is not one they think of, or are even capable of thinking.
Sale and purchase agreement is a new-fangled idea which the British Empire was attuned to, but the retrograde easterners were not, and are still not if we judge by Beijing's attitude to Taiwan which has been independent of China for over half a century.
China taking over Taiwan, against Taiwanese will, is as reasonable as the descendants of Chiang Kai-shek returning to his home town and proclaiming ownership of China at the point of a gun.
You are obviously ignorant: <nz bought, fair and square? ... giggle....> That's understandable. Right now, people from China are doing in NZ just the same as British people did in the early 19th century = buying up large from the local yokels who are grateful for the economic boost provided by the thrifty, energetic, productive, civilized and wealthy people from distant lands, even if they bring with them weird language, strange cultural norms and start swinging their political muscle around.
It will not be many decades before both Maoris and "Kiwis" are in the minority here. At that time, there will be skirmishing and perhaps some stern words from Beijing and maybe some land confiscations in reprisal for local barbarian attacks and to bring order to a disordered state.
Old age pensioners will be told that they should have provided for themselves and welfare bludgers in general will be informed that the normal way of life is for family to take care of the indigent. Welfare state funding will be cut back severely. If they learn Mandarin, they might get tax credits or some small stipend if they report on any untoward insurrectionists.
