There are many things about college beyond the actual book knowledge which can be "invaluble" - IF the college you pick has them AND a student takes advantage of them.

1) Having a ticket, having a credential. Many fields are credential mad, and use it as a subsitute for thought.

2) Personal contacts and friends. This depends on you school and how well you network.

3) Exposure to really different viewpoints.

4) The chance to experiment with different behaviours with little supervison.

Not many schools will have elements equal to 50 k debt... if they aren't Stanford or Harvard, they need to wake up.
