What I got out of you article was this....

"Analysts believe BT probably has lost its battle to buy MCI outright, but they say the apparently close relationship between BT and GTE might yield a three-way partnership that could leave BT "laughing." For example, the British group might be able to secure its U.S. platform as well as its global ambitions, via a multinational joint venture it has set up with MCI called Concert Communications, without the financial exposure of a takeover."
