I actually wrote papers to that effect in grad school. One paper regarding Asia concluded that china and vietnam would eventually move to unique form of democracy based on a mixture of confuscianism, marxism and jeffersonianism. Still waiting for the third piece.
Re: US and other western democracies, that democracy is only as strong as the economy is robust and perceived as generally fair. US in trouble now on both fronts so the crazies are out there on both wings, more vociferously on the right as the left crazies sort of neutered by Obama presidency.
