One thing that makes the elite colleges elite is that they give out a great deal of scholarship money so that intelligent and hard-working students can attend. They also are very selective in accepting students whose families can pay their high tuitions and other costs; they overcharge those who can pay and redistribute to those who can't.

Below a certain level in the United States you have institutions that operate like businesses, accepting a very high percentage of those who apply and charging high fees for amenities that make life pleasant.

There are many exceptions, but generally speaking students get a good education in elite schools and get a piece of paper from the others.

Most comments on SI about elite schools seem to be made by those who did not attend them.
