In this particular case, it is a no win situation for Obama if he gets drawn into the entanglements of political/legal/principle and personal elements of the issue. You want a pound of Bush flesh. I think Obama is smarter than that but I could be wrong. The issue will be worked out and resolved by the justice department and that is where it should be handled.
Agree with your post, and I thought he was smarter, too -- but he is already in the soup at this point. Holder advocated for the release of the documents, and now Holder is in charge of deciding what to do about it. I may be wrong, but there is only one way this goes.
The Justice Dept, like it or not, is a political entity. They try to claim otherwise, but it is and always has been. Was under Bush, was under Clinton, and AFAIK, all the way back.
As long as we don't take a terrorist attack, the political benefit will inure to Obama. But if we get hit again, it is Obama's baby, lock, stock and barrel.
I believe Bush did so much damage to AQ and so depressed their ability until Jan this year, it is doubtful they can rebuild to mount a serious attack in the coming 3+ years. The only thing is that the heat is now off of AQ -- not only is he gutting our intel gathering capability, he has Pakistan to deal with. |
