It's true that many bloggers are hacks, or at best offer plain-vanilla content. But it was bloggers (not mainstream journalists) who first started raising red flags about the (then) imminent financial and economic crises. Mainstream media served the public very poorly, IMO.

Now they're all over the crisis, but where were the warnings when people needed them?

Some are really plugged in to their area of expertise - offering insights that were never available to ordinary people before.
