Its pretty clear from that they don't know what caused the extinctions in that period but they're likely related to extreme volcanism.

Either blocking out sunlight preventing photosynthesis or acid rain or CO2 / methane induced global warming. Lets face this is a writing of global warming into the historical record. I'll bet you sources written before global warming theory was advanced didn't cite CO2 or methane.

Here's a question, if there was a positive feedback loop back then, why did it ever stop?
