Challenge, go back to early WWII years and before and the rates were more like 1-2% for the middle class, the real middle class. Before 1913 Federal taxes were virtually nill for anyone not buying imported goods as there was no income tax (except for Civil War years) and the budget was met with import duties.

I believe people in the 50's & 60's believed we had just fought a very expensive world war, we were then involved in smaller but expensive wars (Korea/Vietnam) and were in danger of global conflict via the cold war which required excessive expenditures for defense. No I don't know if that was true or not, and its easy to argue either way with 20/20 hindsight knowing how things turned out, I'm just saying that was the mindset back then, so taxes were paid without as much grumbling as would have been otherwise.

Since then?? Well, Ike did give a speech about the military industrial complex back then and he should have known...looks like he was right.
