I don't see the right getting all exercised about prison rape, either. The subject doesn't seem to come up often. In any case, you don't see the left writing memos trying to justify prison rape as being legal, do you? And despite the words of one crackpot Democrat who said something rude about a political opponent, which were wrong but have zero relevance here, you don't see the left recommending it as a policy.

Meanwhile, your comments about the Somali pirates are far off the mark. They were in the act of threatening the life of a US citizen when they were shot. They were in the middle of committing a crime. Shooting them made sense, and was completely justifiable and legal.

If we had taken them captive and then tortured them to get information, that would have been illegal and wrong.

The straight forward reality that you fail to see is that torture doesn't produce better intelligence results, and it helps to motivate our enemies. It makes us less secure, not more secure. Ignore the moral implications if you like. You can just oppose torture because it doesn't work.
