I think it's because of Mormon insularity. A huge part of the economy here is strictly local. It's also very diversified. This place doesn't have any one industry that anchors it.

Definitely.

We were during okay until last Fall and then things fell off a cliff. Boeing and MSFT are laying off. Last July, the state was predicting a decent surplus of revenues for the year; now we have a shortfall that is almost as bad as CA's.
