The Republican strategist said Sen. John McCain passed over his first choice for vice president — Democrat-turned-Independent Joe Lieberman — in favor of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to avoid an all-out GOP civil war.

And there, in a nutshell, is the difference between Democrats and Republicans. Nobody threatened civil war when John Kerry was floating McCain as a VP possibility, even though McCain has pretty impeccable pro-life credentials. The Republicans or movement conservatives or whoever's running that side of the aisle have so many dogmatic litmus tests, failing any of which makes you a RINO, it's a wonder anybody runs for anything there. It's sometimes trying sticking with Will Roger's proverbial no organized political party, except when you consider the alternative.

I was sort of disappointed Guiliani never got any traction there - it would have been irritating going through another season of 9/11 24-7, but on the other hand it would have been pretty entertaining seeing the hard core try to accommodate his New Yorker social tolerance.
