We didn't really STICK with Afghanistan.

Yes we did.

We put Karzai in there and then went on to Iraq.

And after the invasion of Iraq force levels in Afghanistan didn't go down, in fact they went up.

Our "invasion on the cheap" using the Northern Alliance

Using the locals made tremendous sense for logistical reasons and for reasons of Afghan domestic politics. Also it allowed things to happen much faster in Afghanistan.

If we didn't support and encourage the Northern Alliance then we would have had higher American casualties, the Taliban would have been in power longer, and in the longer run at best things would have been about the same as what we have now.
