Actually, it really is a code.

BO is a term for Soybean Oil. Some firms use slightly different terms for the Electronic Equivalent, like ZL. But BO is the usual term.

Each month has a letter code in Futures Markets, K for May, M for June, et cetera.

N is July.

The Symbol and Month are followed by the year,

...so BON09 is July 2009 Soybean Oil. Aren't you glad you asked?
