<<<This expands the debate on torture into an area in which I think the country and the world is not yet ready for--ostensibly to outlawing war (if we're going to do away with killing).>>>

We came out of the closet some 50 years ago. We were a fringe group and were for the most part dismissed as being harmless kooks.

We supported the civil rights movement, equal rights for woman, and we were anti war. Now that we are out of the closet we speak out against nuclear proliferation, capital punishment, and torture. We support gay rights and gun control. There still aren't that many of us but we are no longer merely a fringe group.

We are beginning to get the attention of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and the likes of Glenn Beck.

We are still considered to be on the far left of the political spectrum. But guess what? We may have support in some very high places.

Torture, gun control, etc, etc are all part and parcel of the same thing.

We are now gathering outside the gates. The barbarians are on the inside. It will not be that long before things really, really change. That is the audacity of hope.
