Joe, an interesting study would be to track the correlation of the number of false positive diagnosis of HPV vs. the donation amounts by corresponding big pharma, which appears to be Merck (and 3M?). Here is an old link to an interesting story:

thestreet.com

Tell me corruption in politics is not alive and well in America. MRK is down near its 52 week low. . . actually its 14 year low.

In 2007 Merck was lobbying for a law that ALL girls as young as 11 be required by law to receive the HPV vaccine. At that rate, I am surprised McDonalds isn't lobbying to take over the school lunch programs nationwide. Who knows? In this political climate, it could pass.

Merck first quarter 2009 dropped 45%, way worse than expected. Do you think they don't have a plan for getting in on the Swine flu excitement? The primary ingredient in Tamiflu is part of a Asian star fruit. . .nothing synthetic there to patent. . . just come up with a "me too". . . and you best believe the FDA will be pressured to allow for a reduction in time to market.

So the sharp decline on the disappointing earnings on MRK could lead to a buy and wait position op. . . for those of you with closepins on your nose and intestinal fortitude.
