Marinol was devised to provide the known qualities of marijuana without the plant matter. So why did the company decide to develop this produce? Something somewhere indicated to the company that there was a product that could be developed. That research direction didn't materialize in a vacuum. Stories circulate. Rumors, hints of what just might be available. These hints attract the interest of researchers. Then they try to get a study going. If an effect is reproducible then someone in that area should be interested.
