Human to human contact is more efficient since humans have far more contact with humans. Once no humans have the influenza, due to a quarantine, the disease can reappear in humans from birds or pigs. The human population has to acquire immunity to the new pathogen. The curious thing about these trans-species pathogens is a variant which is deadly to one species does not necessarily cause disease in the other species. .
