Insurance is about spreading the cost of risk. The only problem I have with socializing health insurance is that I pay for people who take on risk by taking poor care of themselves -- which I pay for one way or another anyway as far as I can see. I am ultimately comfortable viewing health care as a public good -- like the police and the fire department and city roads. When you are robbed on the street the police do not ask you for your police insurance card. When you call the fire department nobody asks you for proof of firefighting insurance before hosing down your house. Why should health care be any different?
