The air is thin 2 miles about sea level so not only is there less lift to be done, it's not like wading through treacle. Those rockets go quite quickly and air is quite resistant to movement at high speed.

Also, being closer to the equator, lateral speed is higher so less acceleration is needed to get to orbital speeds [assuming an equatorial orbit or with a large component of equatorial velocity].
