BHP closure has 'minimal impact' on Esperance traders

The Shire of Esperance says the closure of BHP Billiton's local nickel operation has not impacted on the Western Australian south coast town's economy.

Shire president Ian Mickel says since its announcement three months ago the closure has only impacted on a couple of Esperance businesses.

He says the flow-on effects have been much smaller than first feared.

"The general feedback I'm picking up from businesses is that it's had minimal impact," he said.

"There have been individual businesses that have focused pretty closely to the BHP operations and they've had to restructure now but overall the impact has been negligible."
