Obama isn't a soldier and needn't pretend to be one by getting too prissy about saluting. American military officers don't salute in civvies. No Prez did until Reagan, I think. Now if one didn't salute it would be commented upon. My favorite salute story was from WWII when a group of British Officers who were meeting a ship full of Aussie soldiers were pelted off the dock by shillings thown at them by the soldiers. Don't have a link, but it happened. Worst thing I know that the Aussies did during WWII was that the Dock Unions would not work ships at any decent pace or let anybody else work them. It really got out of hand.
