The Catholic court

A reader points out that the appointment of a Hispanic Catholic -- and most American Hispanics are Catholic or of Catholic origin -- to the Supreme Court would diminish the court's diversity in one way: The court would then be fully two-thirds Catholic.

The court's Catholic majority -- Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Alito, and Kennedy -- also serves as the majority on some conservative decisions, and Obama's appointee is unlikely to join that group.

In any case, it's an interesting anomaly.

Beliefnet reports that Sonia Sotomayor's faith is "apparently Catholic," though her faith doesn't seem to be public.
