I can help you understand.

Originally the coins were mementos that later grew into being known as challenge coins. To the best of my knowledge and recollection it all began in SF and stayed in SF for many years. They are all over the army now.

The challenge is to present your SF coin on a bar or table. Often that means slapping your coin down. Anyone without an SF coin gets to buy a round. That is why I keep one on my key ring.

However if everyone has such a coin, the challenger gets to pay for the next round!!!
Watch out for those double edged swords.

Now, I never heard of dropping a coin. I never saw that done in SF. We have too much respect for our symbols to be throwing them on the ground.
