More properly he was unitarian, rejecting the divinity of Christ and the trinity. He did believe that God was active in the worlds affairs which sets him apart from a true deist. At any rate, Jefferson as either a deist or a unitarian would have believed the universe is intelligently designed, especially if he knew what we know today.
