What happened was there was lots of urgent sellers, but mostly reluctant buyers. For every seller (at least in $ terms) there is a buyer but in a bear market the buyers are only interested at lower prices. There are several reasons why somebody might have to sell such as margin calls, a kid off to Yale, etc., but nobody ever has to buy a stock. The main reason there is a long term up trend to stock markets is because of underlying growth and increased wealth in the "real world". Buying with borrowed money in an antique bull market like this one is not very bright. If you want extra leverage buy stocks plus very long term LEAPS or warrants. Did anybody really think the market would go up forever without a pause? When it gets too easy to make money, you are ready to be taught the lesson that it's not as easy as it looks.
