BHP Billiton Illawarra Coal says its investment in new long-wall mining equipment for its Appin Mine is part of the company's long-term commitment to mining in the area.

The purchase, costing nearly $23 million for a new long-wall sheerer, will allow Illawarra Coal to prepare new sites for mining before finishing in an existing area.

Illawarra Coal's general manager for sustainable development and external affairs, John Brannon, says the new equipment will reduce down-time between mining different sites.

"So normally it takes about five weeks when we finish mining in one area then we then move to a new area, it's approximately a four to five week changeover period, and this will enable us to reduce that period quite significantly," he said.
