Well, it isn't that simple. Originally, in Feb '89, he made his statement. Then, in March, he said:

"In Islam there is a line between let's say freedom and the line which is then transgressed into immorality and irresponsibility and I think as far as this writer is concerned, unfortunately, he has been irresponsible with his freedom of speech. Salman Rushdie or indeed any writer who abuses the prophet, or indeed any prophet, under Islamic law, the sentence for that is actually death. It's got to be seen as a deterrent, so that other people should not commit the same mistake again."

So, in March, he hadn't backed off. Then, a few months later, he reaffirmed it in his interview with Geoffry Robertson.

He never truly expressed any "retraction or regret" -- other than regret over the effect on himself. He denied it happened, said he was joking, and claimed the media was attacking him. But he never withdrew the statements.

So I understand you -- you think it is okay that Michael Savage has been silenced? Would you support that in this country?
