I have seen lots of kids labeled with Autism. The severe cases, unquestionably need services. I've observed the family structure and Savage is right about some of those kids identified with mild autism.

My daughter is a Speech Pathologist with a Ph.D. in Autism Studies. Autism comes in a wide variety of forms. But there is a common thread and that is ALMOST ALL respond on some level to the techniques of behavioral analysis.

I've seen video of her taking adolescent children who were totally unable to communicate -- at all -- and having them speaking (or signing) sentences in a few months time. But outside service providers can only do so much -- if the parents aren't understanding and participating in the process, she can't help them. I'm thinking of a case where she had to resign because the child was out of control. The parents believed she was being too demanding of the child, by requiring him/her to focus during their sessions. She told the parents unless they took some initiative, no amount of therapy would help. They eventually came around and progress was made.

When my daughter first began down this path, I was a skeptic as to whether Autism was real. But having seen hours of video of her working with the children it is clear to me that the entire range of autism disorders does exist and is treatable.
