Actually, it need not be in this day and age.

Just as we have ebay for auctions, we could have a similar place for commercial barter exchanges. IN fact, I'd be surprised if something like that doesn't already exist.

Even 20 years ago, when I was a practicing CPA, there were exchanges for real property for people who wanted to structure tax-free exchanges. Since real estate isn't particular fungible, it was hit or miss.

But if you're trading oil for soybeans, I can see it.

OTOH, it wouldn't be necessary. There are plenty of other alternatives that need not involve banks in borderline condition.
