they were not looking for reason, they were trying to protect religion from the growth of the mind, and they did so by trying to instill the idea that reason is founded on something which is no better than faith...best to forget them all and start from the beginning, ie, what are the foundations of knowledge, and how do we know it? (or, what is a good stock, and how do we know it? ...g...)
Ayn Rand answered this question, and thus earned for herself the animosity of all who would defend their faith to the bitter end...which seems to be quite a few folks....
