The USA has enjoyed the biggest rort in human history by persuading people around the world to accept US$ promissory notes saying "In God We Trust". Note it does NOT say in "Gold" we trust. Gold is more reliable than God. If the US$ turns to confetti, it won't be much use sending God an email asking him to make good on the promise of payment. But if US$ was still an ownership certificate for gold it would not be at risk.

Note that they had the good sense to NOT put "In Uncle Al KBE We Trust", nor "Big Ben's Rulz OK".

< why should the US care what happens to the dollar, if it decides to turn isolationist? > When currencies head for zero, it's a great problem for the primary users of those currencies.
