Heck, I've prosecuted and defended age discrimination cases. Of course, the line of demarcation is age 40. I've told many a white male turning 40 that he should be glad that he's finally in a *protected* classification.<g>

There is just something about people insisting on retaining these positions in their late 70's and 80's. The jobs I'd target are not those where someone else can easily monitor.

No one follows Arlen Specter around to make sure he's working.

Similarly, it takes a lot of complaints and an investigation before a state court judge can be removed for inability to handle his/her work.

Since such positions carry with them a responsibility to the taxpayer, there should be greater safeguards.

Based on my own experience, many such individuals can't be trusted to make the right decision themselves.

I don't think there should be similar rules in private industry, although there are some, such as the rule requiring airline pilots to retire at 60.
