That's a really great story and perfectly appropriate for this forum.

Last year I found an Indian grave that was marked with a headstone, right on the state line between Montana and Idaho, two miles from the nearest road. I tried to report it to the tribe, but they already knew of it, of course.

Tribal people are trying to restore their culture in many places. On the Salish-Kootenai reservation in Montana, from which I just returned, all the highway signs have a Salish name underneath the English one. The Salish alphabet is based on the same one we use, but has all kinds of special characters to indicate sounds their language has. It must be very difficult to learn.

Natives tend to be very secretive about their spiritual matters, which is fine with me. It's good that they are trying to restore some of their ancient culture, which in many ways is better than the one they ended up with after white people took over. Now they are learning about some of their own history from scientific and cultural discoveries made by whites.
