I think the wrongly classified manufacturing jobs were at least 25%, maybe one third.

So if there were 36% employment in manufacturing in the late 1950s, the comprable number with today's classifications might be 27%

So we would see MFG. employment go from 27 to 20%, not from 36 to 20 %.

One example that just occured to me - Oil companies used to run their own rigs - now they contract to SEDCO, Halliburton, Nabors, Grey Wolf, etc.

I expect these drilling operations are classified as "service jobs" since the companies are in a category called "oil service firms".
