In a profits warning last month, Deutsche Telekom highlighted T-Mobile, the UK's fourth-largest mobile phone operator, as a problem area. It said revenue in the UK was down by about 21pc year-on-year as T-Mobile UK struggles to compete with more established players.

There has been intense speculation that Deutsche Telekom's major shareholders, the German government and private equity group Blackstone, are pushing for the company to sell the UK business. Rene Obermann, the chief executive, said "consolidation would be good for the market [in the UK]". The writedown sent Deutsche Telekom to a first quarter net loss of €1.1bn, compared to a €924m a year earlier.
