It occurs to me that while many on the left - maybe most - have a certain active dislike towards free markets, far too many on the republican side... do not trust them sufficiently.

Sufficiently for what? Markets are susceptible to panics, and don't right themselves quickly without aid. In some cases, interference can be beneficial. Cf. J Pierpont Morgan and the Panic of 1906.
