Black Democratic leadership is to the left of the black community on this.

A few decades ago, Jesse Jackson went around saying the Bible said Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve, now he and the rest of the black leadership is on board the liberal bus on this issue. Same thing occurred in CA where blacks voted substantially heavier against gay marriage than whites.

There's a similar gap between the leadership and a majority of blacks on issues like school choice and illegal immigration where black politicians follow the liberal line but most blacks are small-C conservative on those issues.

How to exploit the wedge potential here to peel a significant percentage of blacks away from the Dems I don't know and no one has figured out so far. Thats why people talk about the liberal plantation - blacks vote for people who don't support their values. The small number of blacks who vote Republican do so mostly because of social conservative issues - abortion, etc. Economic or national defense arguments don't carry much weight so far.
