The Sunni/Shia divide is a second tier conflict in comparison to their top tier mutual desire to wipe out Israel.

I don't think so, which may be a kind of saving grace for Israel.

The Iranian desire to regain what they feel is their natural place as masters of the Arabs is very real (it's not called "The Persian Gulf" for nothing). Under Khomenei and his successors, Iran cannot decide if it's a country or a cause, as Amir Taheri says; it has the added impetus of exporting revolutionary Shiism.

The Arabs don't want to be ruled by Iran, but don't have the power to stop it. So that is pushing them into a kind of alliance with Israel. When Israel struck Syria, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Iran, remember how quiet the Arab world was? Not a peep of protest.

I have no doubt whatsoever that O's basic beliefs line up with Jimmy Carter's. Look at the second tier of hires: Robert Malley, Susan Rice, Samantha Powers, etc. All transnational leftists.
