COMDEX/Fall '97 -- Multimedia-based PCs are becoming the basic PC configuration for business. The IT industry is focused on making all new office PCs complete multimedia systems. This shift in business computing is being led by Intel Corp., a COMDEX exhibitor, with its multimedia processor, the MMX. Thousands of multimedia business solutions including DVD, stereo-quality audio, and publishing will be previewed at COMDEX Multimedia, one of five technology areas at COMDEX/Fall '97, November 17-21 in Las Vegas.
By the end of 1998, the majority of PCs will be shipped with DVD drives capable of reading discs that can hold up to 18+ GB of data. Once the majority of PCs shipped can read DVD discs, more software developers will take advantage of this innovation.
At COMDEX/Fall '97, Panasonic will highlight DVD technology developed by parent company Matsushita Electric. Applications will include DVD-ROM-equipped notebook PCs, DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM drives, DVD players and authoring products. E4 will demonstrate its CoolDVD, a DVD multimedia upgrade kit that is graphics independent.
Business-oriented multimedia products will continue to expand as MPEG II video compression technology is integrated in all new MMX PCs, expected to happen in 1998. Oak Technology Inc. will showcase Troika, a fully integrated DVD presentation engine (MPEG II video/ Dolby Digital audio) for DVD players and PC-DVD. Jazz Multimedia will present Jammin' DVD II, incorporating MPEG II technology with Dolby AC-3 surround sound for the theatre experience. [CUBE inside!!]
